My first Automechanika webinar topic focused on The EV Future – A Need for new Skills in the Automotive Industry.
The introduction of electronics forced the last major update in the skill set needed for successful maintenance of customer cars. With that came multiple control units and bus systems in various forms. Now with the EV & Hybrid proliferation, the motor industry is undergoing the greatest technological change of the past 100 years. These ACES technologies (Autonomous, Connected, Electrified & Shared) are demanding new skill sets and standards. These skills and standards will help ensure the safety of both – the technicians working on the products and the customers who are using them. To ensure a sustained after-sales revenue stream, service managers need to ensure that their teams are getting a ticket on this bus before it is moving too fast to jump on.
The IMI has developed, with their partners, what is known as the Techsafe standards. My co-presenters Steve Nash and Tom Denton discussed these as well as the existing standards for the different forms of EV’s; from mild hybrids to full plug-in hybrids, and of course full EV’s. Following this, I brought the conversation to the Middle East markets and how prepared they are. This overview includes the roles of government agencies, national dealers and regional offices in transitioning to the future EV phases. Is the region ready to handle repairs & maintenance for EV cars? What is the status of the talent located in the region?
So, how prepared is your organisation for this shift in the industry?
